Man gets 18 years for revenge killing

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A man who shot and killed a 64-year-old Valencia Park resident in retaliation for a gang-related shootout with the victim’s son the night before was sentenced Thursday to 18 years in state prison.

Terrill Bell, 37, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter last month after his murder trial ended in a hung jury.

Charles McGee, also known as Nieme Jabbar, was sitting in a parked car in front of his home in the 5200 block of San Bernardo Terrace when he was shot from a passing car about 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 16, 2004, police said.

Prosecutors theorize that Bell shot McGee in retaliation for a gang-related shootout the night before involving McGee’s son and the defendant.

Parthenia McGee, one of the victim’s daughters, said in a letter to the court that her father was a loving man who was killed for no reason.

“He was a great dad,” McGee’s daughter said. “The pain is just unbearable.”

Bell was serving a prison term for an unrelated crime in 2010 when he was identified as McGee’s killer, according to San Diego police.
