Man struck and killed by trolley in El Cajon

EL CAJON (CNS) – Authorities have identified a 48-year-old man who was
fatally struck by a trolley in El Cajon on Wednesday.

Andre Duff Zollicoffer of El Cajon stepped off a platform in front of a
southbound trolley at a transit depot in the 700 block of North Marshall Avenue
shortly before 2:30 p.m., according to El Cajon police and the San
Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

“The trolley driver immediately attempted to stop by activating the
emergency brake and sounding the … emergency horn,” said El Cajon police Lt.
Frank La Haye said.

Zollicoffer tried to get back on the platform but failed to avoid being
struck, La Haye said. He died at the scene.

The incident prompted the suspension of light-rail service between
Gillespie Field airport and Main Street in El Cajon for about two hours, MTS
spokesman Rob Schupp said. During the disruption, buses ferried commuters
through the area.
