Man in custody after attempting marijuana chemical process, setting apartment on fire
VISTA (KUSI) — A Carlsbad man was behind bars Thursday on suspicion of accidentally setting fire to his apartment while attempting a chemical process that derives hash oil from marijuana, police reported.
Jesse Estes, 33, allegedly was using butane to make the potent cannabis byproduct in the kitchen of the residence in the 2200 block of Avenida Magnifica when the chemical created an explosion shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.
Another roommate used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the resulting blaze.
When officers sought to detain Estes for questioning, he allegedly tried in vain to escape by climbing off a third-story balcony.
The suspect was taken into custody and treated for burn injuries at a hospital before being booked into county jail in Vista on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance and possessing marijuana for sale.
