Man kills daughter and six grandchildren in Florida

BELL, Fla. (AP) – A Florida man shot and killed his daughter and six grandchildren Thursday afternoon in the small north-central Florida town of Bell in what authorities called a murder-suicide.

The Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed to The Associated Press that it is investigating a shooting in the town of Bell Thursday and that a news conference has been scheduled for 8 p.m. Reports say police are classifying it as a major shooting.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were shot or their ages and genders.

A photo on the Gainesville Sun’s website shows several police vehicles on a rural road. A sheriff’s deputy was keeping people away behind police tape.

Bell is small town of just 350 people about 30 miles west of Gainesville.
