Man points rifle at Clairemont school prompting campus lockdown

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A report of a man pointing a rifle toward a playground at a Clairemont kindergarten-through-12th-grade school Thursday prompted a lockdown at the campus while officers searched the area and took a possible suspect into custody.

Several students reported seeing a gun-brandishing man at a home near John Muir School in the 4400 block of Mount Herbert Avenue shortly before 3 p.m., according to San Diego police.

Campus administrators secured students in their classrooms while officers surrounded the Mount Laudo Drive house, just south of the school.

About 3:40 p.m., a man complied with officers’ orders to exit the residence and was taken into custody, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said. The detainee’s name was not immediately available.

No gunshots or injuries were reported.
