Man shot by police in La Mesa

LA MESA (CNS) – An investigation is underway into the fatal shooting of a man by police officers as he allegedly pointed a shotgun at them.

Officers said dispatchers received emergency calls reporting that a man was armed with a gun, near the 8300 block of Pine Court, police said. One caller reported a woman screaming and another told police the suspect pointed a rifle at a neighbor's door while the woman involved in the domestic dispute fled.

Officers armed themselves with rifles and pistols at a nearby corner, at Pine Street and University Avenue, then headed north toward the suspect's reported location, police said.

According to a police report, officers approached the suspect, identified themselves and ordered him to drop his weapon. The suspect then allegedly racked the shotgun and pointed it at the approaching officers, police said.

Officers opened fire on the suspect and he was struck by at least one round, police said. Police were unsure how many rounds were fired or how many struck the suspect.

Officers rendered medical aid to the suspect and called for paramedics, the police report said. The suspect died at the scene.

The suspect's identity was withheld pending notification of his family by the medical examiner, police said.

Pine Street between University Avenue and Allison Avenue was closed until 9 a.m., police said.
