Man threatens to jump from University Avenue overpass

HILLCREST (CNS) – A man threatened to jump from the University Avenue overpass onto State Route 163 forced the Cabrillo Freeway to be closed for about two hours Sunday, until police succeeded in talking him down.

The incident began about 11:20 p.m. Saturday when witnesses reported a man was standing on the outside of the bridge railing and threatening to jump, San Diego Police Sgt. Tom Sullivan said.

Sullivan said a Sigalert was issued closing off traffic on University over the freeway while CHP officers diverted northbound freeway traffic to the Richmond Street exit.

“A negotiator was sent to talk to the man at 11:51 p.m.,” Sullivan said. “He was taken into custody at 1:17 a.m. The freeway was reopened at 1:17 a.m.”

The man was not identified. Sullivan said he was white, 40 years old and barefoot wearing jeans and a blue shirt when he police took him into custody.
