Man who drowned off La Jolla Cove identified by authorities

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Authorities Tuesday released the name of a New York man who drowned during a family outing at La Jolla Cove.

Paul Rooney, 49, was snorkeling with relatives in the ocean off the 1100 block of Coast Boulevard when he developed apparent medical distress shortly before 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Medics took him to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

An autopsy determined that hypertensive cardiovascular disease was a contributing factor in Rooney’s death.
