Man who killed girlfriend sentenced

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A man who strangled his girlfriend during an argument at her Bay Terraces apartment was sentenced Tuesday to 11 years in state prison.

Martin Huey, 23, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the April 14 death of 22-year-old Angelica Gregory.

“You stole her life,” Tawana Hogan, the victim’s older sister, told the defendant at today’s sentencing. “I will not let you do this to another family.”

Deputy District Attorney Ted Minahan said Huey showed up at Gregory’s apartment and they started arguing.

The defendant hit the victim twice in the face then put her in a chokehold until she died, according to the prosecutor.

Huey did not immediately call 911 but eventually called his aunt, who notified authorities, Minahan said.

The defendant first told officers that another man may have killed Gregory, but later admitted that he beat and choked the victim, saying that he thought she was going for a knife, Minahan said.

Huey was taken into custody in Riverside two days later.

The defendant and the victim had dated on-and-off for about two years, according to the prosecutor.
