Man shot by CHP officers on Coronado Bridge identified

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – An apparently suicidal man who was fatally shot by California Highway Patrol officers on the Coronado Bridge when he appeared to be pulling a gun on them was publicly identified Monday.

Passers-by spotted Rudy Ledbetter, 54, pacing in westbound traffic lanes on the towering span over San Diego Bay shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

When CHP personnel contacted him a few minutes later, Ledbetter told them he was going to jump, San Diego police homicide Lt. Ernie Herbert said. Ledbetter also claimed to have a gun and threatened to shoot the officers if they tried to stop him, according to Herbert.

As the officers were trying to persuade Ledbetter to surrender so they could get help for him, he allegedly put his hand into a pocket and quickly removed it, as if drawing a pistol or other weapon. Three officers then opened fire, killing him at the scene.
