Mar Vista 21, Santana 35
Santana High School putting an end to their three game losing streak with a 35-21 victory over Mar Vista.
This game the running battle many expected, but Friday was the Sultans Zach Lewis’ night. He would have 15 carries for 163 yards and 5 touchdowns including a momentum changing 95 yard kickoff return to start the 2nd half. Afterwards the junior running back gave all the credit to his line and blockers. Santana playing both backup quarterbacks, primarily Aaron Miranda since starter Frankie Gutierrez is out on crutches with an ankle injury. The team had a critical fumble recovery in the 2nd quarter by Austin Pachecho that would set up a Zach Lewis touchdown.
But this game was in no way one sided, in fact it was tied at 14 at half. Mar Vista quarterback Benjamin Munoz would find Nigel Collins twice in the first half first for a 30 yard touchdown and then for the big 80 yard touchdown to tie the game at half. There was also flashes of greatness by sophomore running back Khalil Spruill who was very close to breaking one free multiple times throughout the night.
Next up for the Mariners is Southwest. As for Santana they will host Monte Vista in Week 7.
