Mar Vista 28, Gabrielino 18
The Eagles of Gabrielino flew down from San Gabriel to take on the Mar Vista Mariners on Friday night. Expected to be a tough match up, both sidelines were pumped for kickoff.
As a huge statement early in the first quarter, Mariners RB Khalil Spruill took the ball 59 yards to the house. Shortly after a Gabrielino 3 and out, Mar Vista punched it in again thanks to a 29 yard touchdown pass from Benjamin Munoz to Josh Cooper. This gave the Mariners a quick 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Going into the second quarter, Eagles were driving and poised to score when their efforts fell short on a potential TD pass batted away by Xavier Williams on 4th and goal. After taking over on downs, Khalil Spruill once again had a beautiful 52 yard run which was stopped short because of a fumble that went out of bounds. However, this lead to another Spruill touchdown, this time from seven yards out.
The first half of the game proved to be all Mar Vista and their stout defense and powerful run game. Despite Gabrielino managing to score 18 points throughout the game, the Mariners beat out the Eagles 28-18.
Next week the 3-1 Mar Vista squad will be taking on Santana, a team that is currently on a two game losing streak.
