Mater Dei Catholic 41, San Ysidro 6

The Crusaders (2-2) had their way with cross-town rival San Ysidro defeating the Cougars 41-6.

Mater Dei looked fresh after the bye week flying around, making plays, and capitalizing on turnovers.

The Cougars had two turnovers in the first half in which the Crusaders followed up with scoring on their very first offensive play.After the first fumble recovery, Quarterback Jarrod Rieta stood tall in the pocket and threw a strike to Adrian Alba for a 22-yard touchdown. Following a sack and fumble recovery, Mater Dei’s Luis Victoria found the end zone from 10 yards out to take a 21-0 lead in the first half.

The run game was effective early complimenting the solid play of quarterback Jarrod Rieta. The sophomore was 7-of-12 and threw for 139 passing yards and one touchdown in the first half.

Both senior running backs Brian Lopez and Luiz Victoria scored in the first half. Sophomore RB Brandon Keyes scored in the fourth quarter on a nice run from the 10.

The second half ended as fast as it began for the Cougars fumbling on the opening kickoff resulting in a quick Crusader field goal then allowing a touchdown on next two drives.

Mater Dei was hitting on all cylinders while San Ysidro struggled to find a groove.

Mater Dei plays at home to face Bishops in Week 6.

San Ysidro will head back home to play Crawford in Week 6.
