Mayor Gloria credits San Diego’s high vaccination rate for tourism rebound

Mayor Todd Gloria held his monthly media briefing Thursday, where he discussed the return of major conventions and events and their impact on the city budget and local economy.

Gloria said businesses and conventions choose San Diego as their destination because of our COVID-19 response, and our high vaccination rate, before touting the work of the tourism board.

KUSI’s Ed Lenderman asked the Mayor if he supports Comic-Con’s mask mandate, which he says he does, adding that they are a business and can make their own decisions.

Chief Communications & Strategy Officer for Comic-Con International, David Glanzer, also responded to KUSI’s Ed Lenderman saying the response has been “very, very positive” to the mask mandate.

Lenderman then asked about the City of San Diego losing employees due to the vaccine or testing mandate, but Mayor Gloria disagreed that was the reason, saying it was not fact.

Gloria then added that it is true that City workers will have to get vaccinated, get tested, and if they decline those, “their employment with the city will come to an end.”
