MCRD San Diego to name facility after Jerry Coleman

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Longtime Padres announcer Jerry Coleman will have a sports facility at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot named after him Friday.

Coleman, who passed away last year at the age of 89, was also a Marine aviator who flew more than 120 missions in World War II and the Korean War. In his nine-year playing career with the New York Yankees, Coleman hit .263, won four World Series titles, and was the MVP of the 1950 World Series.

“He was an outstanding Marine officer and it reflected both on and off the field,” said Thomas Spencer, director of MCRD San Diego’s Marine Corps Community Service. “This dedication is absolutely befitting. They simply do not come any finer than Jerry Coleman.”

As part of the ceremony, according to officials, several murals, photos and paintings of Coleman will be unveiled.
