Memorial services set for slain SDPD officer
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A memorial service will be held Friday morning for a San Diego police officer gunned down in the line of duty last weekend.
A ceremonial police motorcade will precede the late-morning funeral for 36-year-old Jeremy Henwood at The Rock Church in Liberty Station.
Henwood, a four-year member of the SDPD and a Marine reservist, was mortally wounded by a shotgun blast to the head while sitting in his patrol car at a City Heights intersection early Saturday evening.
The suspected gunman, 23-year-old Dejon Marquee White of San Diego, allegedly had shot another man with the same weapon outside an El Cajon fast- food restaurant about 15 minutes earlier. That victim survived, despite suffering critical injuries to his face and head.
After the assailant fled the scene of the second shooting, a woman who witnessed it used Henwood's police radio to report what had happened. Medics took the officer to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he died early Sunday morning.
About a half-hour after Henwood was ambushed, police found White's vehicle near the suspect's apartment in the 4000 block of 48th Street, several blocks from the site of the slaying. When confronted by officers, White allegedly grabbed his shotgun, prompting them to shoot him.
White died on the spot. A suicide note was found in his apartment, but it did not contain any mention of what he planned to do and no possible motive for the rampage, police said.
The slain officer, a Texas native, had served three tours of military duty overseas. He is survived by his parents, Beverly and Robbie Henwood, brother, Robbie, and sister, Emily, all of San Antonio, Texas.
Henwood was the second San Diego police officer killed on the job within 10 months. In late October, Officer Chris Wilson, 50, was fatally shot during a probation raid at a Skyline-area apartment complex.
The San Diego Police Officers Association has created a trust fund for the Henwood family. Contributions can be mailed to: Officer Jeremy Henwood Family Trust, c/o San Diego Police Officers Association, 8388 Vickers St, San Diego, CA 92111. Donors are asked to write “Officer Jeremy Henwood” in the memo line of their checks.
