Mid-Coast trolley begins construction on new phase in University City

Drilling for viaduct columns on Genesee Avenue begins Thursday morning.

The San Diego Association of Governments is constructing the Mid-Coast Trolley, an 11-mile extension of the San Diego Trolley Blue Line that will bring service from Downtown San Diego to UC San Diego and University City.

Underway since 2016, construction in University City has entered a new phase, where above-ground structures that support the trolley are taking shape.

The Mid-Coast Trolley will extend the Metropolitan Transit System’s Blue Line Trolley service from Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego to the University City community, serving major activity centers such as Old Town, UC San Diego, and University Town Center shopping and entertainment center.

The project is funded in partnership by SANDAG (using regional TransNet half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements) and the Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) New Starts Program.

Construction began in 2016 and service is scheduled to begin in 2021.
