SDUSD extends minimum day schedules through Wednesday due to extreme heat

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — The San Diego Unified School District extended a minimum day schedule through Wednesday for 84 schools within the district as hot, windy and dry conditions continued.

The school district stressed the comfort of students was important to ensure teaching and learning can continue. Schools not under a minimum day schedule will instruct under “Hot Weather Plan” guidelines.

Schools are selected for minimum-day schedules based on several factors, including the availability of air-conditioning, forecast of high temperatures, humidity and the heat index.

The Coronado School District canceled classes at all schools Monday and operated on a minimum day schedule Tuesday. There was no word yet on whether or not classes would be affected Wednesday.

San Diego is under a Red Flag Warning through Wednesday because of gusty Santa Ana winds and above average temperatures for this time of year. Temperatures broke records Monday and were expected to break records again Tuesday.

Forecasters predict some relief from the heat may come Thursday.
