Missing boy found safe at neighbor’s apartment

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A 9-year-old Mid-City boy who ran away from home was found safe in a neighboring apartment Thursday and police said they were investigating why the neighbors who gave him shelter didn't come forward sooner.

Jermaine Whitaker ran away from home about 9 p.m. Wednesday and was found in the 4000 block of 38th Street, where he lives, about 6:50 this morning, said San Diego police Officer Frank Cali. A police statement said without elaboration that the boy was upset about getting into trouble.

Police combed the neighborhood searching for the boy early today until he was found in the neighboring apartment, Cali said.

It was not immediately clear why the neighbors didn't come forward sooner when police converged on the neighborhood, or why they didn't notify his mother. Cali said an investigation was under way.
