Mission Hills High briefly locked down after man with rifle spotted

SAN MARCOS (CNS) – Sheriff's deputies fired one round at a man seen
carrying a rifle near Mission Hills High School Thursday morning.

Deputies received a call about a suspicious armed man near the school at
about 7:55 a.m., prompting a 35-minute lockdown of the school.

Authorities later learned that the suspect was using the rifle to shoot
gophers near his home on Felicia Lane and Richland Road, a sheriff's deputy
said.

Deputies approached the man and told him to put his rifle down, which he
did.

However, deputies fired at the suspect after he picked up the rifle and
pointed it at them, the deputy said.

The man was taken into custody where he is being interrogated.

No one was injured.
