Mission Hills student collapses, dies

SAN MARCOS (CNS) – An investigation was under way Friday into the sudden
death of a seemingly healthy student athlete who collapsed at his San Marcos
high school while playing a pickup basketball game.

Mission Hills senior Anthony Vaeao collapsed at the school about 2:50
p.m. Thursday, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. He was
pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's was tasked with determining a
cause of death. It was not clear early today how long the investigation might
take.

Vaeao was on the school's varsity football team and his grandmother, who
helped raise him, told reporters that he was a happy kid who was never sick.

Tributes to Vaeao were posted on Facebook, and a candlelight vigil was
held at the school Thursday night.

Vaeao, an only child, planned to attend college in the fall, having
signed earlier this year to play football at Arizona Western College in Yuma,
according to U-T San Diego.
