Motorcyclist injured in crash near Coronado Bridge

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A motorcyclist was seriously injured Monday in a fiery collision with a car on Interstate 5 in Logan Heights.

The northbound Yamaha two-wheeler crashed into a Chevrolet Camaro near the Coronado Bridge shortly after 9 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.

The 31-year-old rider fell onto the roadway as his motorcycle, stuck underneath the sedan, was dragged the length of several football fields and began burning, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

“Luckily, the guy wasn't dragged with the motorcycle for 200 yards,” SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

An engine crew arrived a short time later and quickly doused the flames. Medics took the motorcyclist to UCSD Medical Center for treatment of significant but apparently non-life-threatening injuries, Luque said.

The man driving the Camaro was unharmed.

The accident left the northbound side of the freeway blocked for a time. All lanes were clear again by shortly after 10:30 a.m., the CHP reported.
