Mt. Carmel 28, Mira Mesa 23

On Friday night, the Sundevils of Mt. Carmel traveled to Mira Mesa in order to battle it out with the Marauders. The first half was all Mira Mesa, leading 14-0 going into halftime. The home stands were hyped and filled with all sorts of excitement as their team was poised to win the game; but Mt. Carmel had another plan in mind.

Mira Mesa’s Makonnen Hill recovered Mt. Carmel’s fumble on the opening kickoff, which led to a field goal. After that, the momentum quickly switched over to the Sundevils. Despite a 17 point deficit, Mt. Carmel managed to score 4 quick touchdowns that not only put them in the lead, but went unanswered by Mira Mesa until the last minute of the game; final score was 28-23 Falcons.

Mt. Carmel’s defense had 5 sacks and 2 interceptions on the night, which played an important role in their immense comeback. Sundevil’s also showed up on offense with quarterback Lucas Johnson rushing for 59 yards and 2 TD’s as well as throwing for 109 yards and one TD. Mira Mesa’s QB threw for 160 yards as well as 2 touchdowns and WR Steffon McKnight had 8 receptions for 120 yards and a TD.

Even though the Marauders looked thoroughly impressive in the first half, their defense could not hold back the overpowering Sundevils.
