Poway Titans at Mt Carmel Sun Devils

         The Kiwanis Cup hiatus ended last night at Sundevil Stadium. Mt Carmel (5-2, 1-1 Palomar League) hosted their crosstown rival Poway (1-6 , 0-1 Palomar League), for the first time since 2011. A Titan comeback fell short and they lost by a score of 24-14.

    Mt Carmel was dominant in the first half, the Sundevils put up 21 points on the board. Jaylen Jones ran 22-yards for the opening touchdown. Junior Quarterback Lucas Johnson added the second score via a 1-yard run, he then found Rashid Shaheed for a 7-yard strike to put Mt. Carmel up by three scores going into the break,21-0.

    Poway suffered its 6th consecutive loss as they were mounting a comeback. Trailing by 21 points at the half, the Titans came out strong into the second half. Jacob Gaines ran in the 3-yd score to put them on Poway on the board. The momentum pendulum swung in the Titans direction and they scored once more. A quarterback keeper by Chris Butler intend zonendzone put Poway within 7 points, 21-14. That was their last score and thus ending their valiant effort.

    Since 1975 the Kiwanis Cup has been a rivalry game between the two high schools in Poway. It went on a hiatus in 2010, the coveted trophy brings bragging rights for a year. Mt. Carmel has had the cup 13, counting Friday’s win, it ended their cup drought of 8 years. The Sundevils will now face Rancho Bernardo (5-2) in a Palomar League match up. Poway will look to rebound from their league opener loss when they host the Ramona Bulldogs (6-1) next week.
