MTS Free Ride Day aims to change people’s transportation habits

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and North County Transit District offered free rides today on the trolley, coaster, sprinter and fixed-route buses as part of an effort to promote transit as a cleaner alternative to cars.

The day also included significant discounts from Lyft and Bird for first and last-mile solutions.

Transportation makes up the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in California, and the success of the state’s ambitious goals on climate change depends largely on more people choosing transit over driving.

“We encourage all single riders to consider giving carpool, vanpool, or transit a try during Rideshare Week,” SANDAG Vice-Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear said. “Making the change even one day a week will take cars off the road and increase sustainability and quality of life in the San Diego region.”
