Multi-car pile-up snarls traffic on Interstate 15

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A motorist veered off Interstate 15 and struck a
guardrail Wednesday, triggering crashes that brought the morning commute to a
standstill in the City Heights area, authorities said.

There were three minor injury crashes involving a total of seven
vehicles on southbound I-15 north of state Route 94 around 5:30 a.m., according
to California Highway Patrol Officer Art Athans.

The series began when a motorist veered onto the shoulder for unknown
reasons and struck a metal guardrail and a large sign board, Athans said in a
statement.

The vehicle then came to rest in traffic lanes and was broadsided by
another vehicle in a second crash, he said, adding that the third crash
occurred as five other motorists were caught up in the wreckage from the first
two crashes.

Paramedics were at the scene but did not immediately transport anyone to
a hospital, a San Diego fire-rescue dispatcher said. Athans described
injuries from the crash as minor.

As traffic backed up to the Interstate 805 split, the CHP diverted
traffic onto El Cajon Boulevard. The freeway was reopened at 6:35 a.m., Athans
said.
