Overnight SWAT standoff ends with arrest of murder suspect

OCEAN BEACH — 8:00 a.m. — Thomas Burke, 32, was arrested Thursday after an almost nine-hour SWAT standoff on suspicion of murder.

Police were initially called to Voltaire Street just after 11 p.m. Wednesday after reports of a shooting, according to Officer Dino Delimitros. The victim of that shooting later died.

A man and woman entered the complex where Burke lives around 11: 30  p.m. last night, according to police. Police believe that Burke then shot the man, for reasons that are not yet known. A SWAT standoff ensued as the suspect was believed to be barricaded inside of the complex. 

Burke was found in downtown San Diego at 16th and F Streets where a detective talked him into turning himself in, according to police. 

6:30 a.m. — A SWAT standoff continues in a neighborhood in Ocean Beach Thursday after a murder suspect barricaded himself inside a condominium.

Police were initially called to Voltaire Street just after 11 p.m. Wednesday after reports of a shooting, according to Officer Dino Delimitros. The victim of that shooting later died.

The suspect, since identified as 32-year-old Thomas Burke, then sought shelter in a nearby condo near Voltaire St. and Catalina Blvd., authorities said.

Police asked people in the area to use alternate routes as traffic was blocked on 4000-4200 Voltaire St.
