Name released in fatal crash on Interstate 8

ALPINE (CNS) – Authorities Friday released the name of a 38-year-old Pine Valley man who died in a solo-vehicle freeway crash in Alpine.

Trevor Lee Bell was fatally injured about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday in the crash on Interstate 8 east of East Willows Road, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

The victim was driving a Volkswagen GTI at a high rate of speed in the No. 1 lane of westbound I-8 when he lost control for unknown reasons and went across the No. 2 lane and onto the right shoulder, California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Doerr said in a statement.

Witness told investigators that the car then veered to the left and onto the center median before rolling down an embankment that splits the freeway, he said. It came to rest on its wheels in the eastbound lanes.

Bell sustained severe head trauma in the crash, Doerr said, noting he died at the scene.
