Nathan Fletcher steps down as Chair of the Board of Supervisors
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Democrat Supervisor Nathan Fletcher announced he will step down as the Chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.
Fletcher made the announcement in a video published online, as he detailed the plan for the final meeting of 2022.
Fletcher has served as Chair for the last two years, and was unanimously nominated for a second consecutive term in January of 2022. That nomination broke historical tradition, as it made him the first person to serve two consecutive years in over four decades.
Until this unanimous nomination, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors rotated Chair on an annual basis, but that was broken.
In November, Fletcher said he was “exploring a run” for State Senate in 2024, but says he hasn’t made a final decision yet.
The potential State Senate run could be reason for Fletcher stepping down as Chair.
Fletcher will nominate Vice Chair Nora Vargas to become the next Chair. Fletcher said Vargas will be the “first Latina in the hundreds of years history of our County.”
