Naval Medical Center’s armed suspect arrested

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Saturday 12:01 p.m.: Chula Vista police arrested the suspect Saturday at the Chula Vista Public Library.

The 22-year-old suspect, Russell Merck, was seen by a witness at the Chula Vista Public Library at about 11 a.m..

One sergeant entered the library with a detective and Identified Merck. Public information officer Lt. Kenny Heinz said Merck surrendered peacefully.

The San Diego Police Department picked the suspect up from Chula Vista police, SDPD officer Frank Cali said.

Friday 5:05 p.m.: The Navy Medical Center was placed on lockdown Friday after there were reports of an armed suspect. 

Authorities are searching for 22-year-old Russel Merck, who has an outstanding felony arrest warrant. 

As a precaution, the military hospital directed the staff and patients to shelter in place in secured buildings until further notice.

During a foot pursuit of Merck at the Navy Medical Center, an officer fell and was injured, but the extend of his injuries were unknown.

According to authorities, Merck is known to run from police.

Just before 5 p.m., perimeter units were cleared from the scene.
