Naval Training Center to be renamed

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – The widow of a Point Loma Realtor and Navy veteran gave $1.5 million to name a building at Liberty Station after her late husband, the NTC Foundation announced Monday.

The Command Center building, at the site of the old Naval Training Center, will be named the Dick Laub NTC Command Center. The gift was provided by Laub’s widow, Dorothea, according to the foundation.

Richard “Dick” Laub lived in Point Loma for 36 years before his May, 2013, death at the age of 91. He was an avid sport fisherman and the holder of several records for catching marlin and tuna.

“We are extremely grateful to Dottie Laub and the Laub family for their continued and generous support of this community project,” said NTC Foundation Executive Director Alan Ziter. “A gift of this size provides an opportunity for us to continue our mission to transform 26 historic buildings into a thriving arts and culture district, while preserving the legacy of the Naval Training Center.”

The command center contains exhibits on the history of Point Loma, the story of the late-Adm. and former prisoner-of-war James Stockdale and his wife, and the tale of Reuben H. Fleet and his Consolidated Aircraft Corp.

The only other building on the old base to be named is the Corky McMillin Companies Event Center, after the firm that redeveloped the NTC into Liberty Station. Ziter said naming rights are available for any of nine buildings in a third phase of renovations.
