Navy man accidentally shoots himself while showing off gun

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A 22-year-old Navy man accidentally killed himself
with a gunshot to the head at his Pacific Beach home early Thursday while trying
to convince a female companion that the pistol he was showing off was safe to
handle, police reported.

The fatal shooting in the 1800 block of Grand Avenue was reported
shortly after 2 a.m., according to San Diego police.

The serviceman, who had been drinking with the woman at a bar before
returning to his residence, showed her his 9 mm handgun, which he mistakenly
believed was unloaded, and offered to let her hold it, SDPD Officer Frank Cali

When she declined, he tried to demonstrate how safe it was by putting it
to his head and pulling the trigger, Cali said.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital about an hour later.

The sailor, whose name was not immediately released, reportedly had
recently graduated from the Navy's elite special-operations SEAL training.
