NBA star Norman Powell host free youth basketball camp at Lincoln High School

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — Toronto Raptors guard and Lincoln High School legend Norman Powell is back in San Diego for his 3rd annual “Understand the Grind” youth basketball event.

The free basketball camp focuses on fundamental basketball skills for San Diego youth to hone their craft much like Powell did.

Due to popular demand, a second day was added to this years camp. The camp is for kids from ages 7-16 and has two sessions, one for younger and older campers.

Powell lead Lincoln to two San Diego Section 2A championships in 2009 and 2010. The team also captured the 2010 CIF Division II Boys’ State Championship.

After a successful college career at UCLA, Powell was drafted in the second round of the NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks before being traded to the Toronto Raptors.

Powell won’t be the only Raptor with San Diego roots this season. Former San Diego State star and 2X NBA Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard was traded to Toronto by the San Antonio Spurs this off-season.
