New facility being built to replace Las Colinas women’s jail

The issue of jail overcrowding is not confined to men's detention facilities.  The Las Colinas Women's Detention Center in Santee has been overcrowded for years.  Now, as KUSI's Ed Lenderman shows us, help is on the way.

Taking shape in Santee, right next to the Las Colinas facility, is a brand new $270 million complex being built in phases.  The first phase of the yet-to-be-named women's jail is set for completion by late this summer, and not a moment too soon.

Las Colinas is certified for 400 inmates, but on a Monday in early February, the population was more than double that number.

As you look around, you notice the size of the new campus, which is triple the size of the Las Colinas facility.
