New FDA approved drug to treat depression in form of a nasal spray
SAN DIEGO (KUSI)- The FDA has approved a controversial new drug to treat depression that contains a chemical similar to the illegal party drug known as “Special K”. It comes in the form of a nasal spray and is sold under the name Spravato.
It contains a substance similar to ketamine, a powerful anesthetic.
Spravato is intended for patients who’ve tried at least two other anti-depressants without success.
To talk more about this breakthrough treatment for depression is Dr. Ruben Abagyan, a professor in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at UC San Diego.
