New heart care center opens in La Jolla
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Scripps is celebrating the grand opening of a new state of the art heart care center.
A gala Saturday night celebrated the opening of the new heart center.
When Conrad Prebys was a boy growing up in Indiana, a youngster with major health issues, he certainly couldn’t have envisions someday sharing a stage with renowned doctors at an event that attracted noted healthcare related people from throughout the region, along with local government leaders.
The event, the dedication of the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute on the campus of Scripps Health’s Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.
Philanthropist Prebys donated $45 million to the state of the art $456 million center for heart diagnosis and treatment, ground-breaking research and education.
Scripps Officials are touting it as the finest facility of its kind on the West Coast.
“State of the art technology the rooms, a huge boost for San Diego and huge benefit for leading advances help save lives across the country,” said Scripps Health CEO Chris Van Gorder.
The new facility will see its first patient in a week.
Conrad Prebys said he feels honored by the dedication.
“I always say I’m the luckiest man alive now full of so much pride the wonderful job they’ve done building this wonderful institute,” he said.
More than 10 years in the planning and construction, the center combines the cardiovascular programs of two Scripps hospitals, next door memorial and Scripps Green in Torrey Pines.
Not just procedures but research education heart disease remains the number one killer of men and women in the United States.
