New Little Italy bike lanes cause confusion

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – New bike lanes are being added downtown, and it is causing confusion among drivers.

City officials announced the first of three plans to improve lanes for cyclists and scooter riders in downtown last year as part of the Downtown Mobility Plan. The plan calls for 9 miles of bike lanes to be added to major roadways.

That two-way bike lane will be where the cars are parked next to the curb, which will be painted red, and a few parking spots will be pushed towards the middle of the street. This is where many people used to park, resulting in confusion and chaos.

Many local business owners are opposed to the plan, concerned about losing customers. The Little Italy Business Association has formally opposed the plans.

This project is the first phase of the plan that will add bike lanes to Beech St. from Pacific Highway to Sixth Avenue.
