New minimally invasive procedure removes cancerous tumors from the GI tract

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Sharp Grossmont Hospital is one of the only hospitals in the region to offer an advanced procedure to remove cancerous tumors from the gastrointestinal tract.

ESD (endoscopic submucosal dissection) is a minimally invasive procedure that allows patients to go home the same day of treatment. The procedure doesn’t require any external incisions, drastically reducing recovery time, and it allows the doctor to remove tumors in one piece, reducing the chance of cancer recurrence.

Dr. Michael Lajin, Gastroenterologist at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, and Karen Weismann, ESD patient, were in studio to tell us more about it.
