North County Game of the Week: El Camino 21, Poway 14
Beau knows 4th Quarter comebacks
The El Camino Wildcats (2-1) scored 21 unanswered points behind back up quarterback Beau Gallegos to beat the Poway Titans (1-2) on the road 21-14 in a non-league contest. “Even though I am back up quarterback, I have to be ready at all times,” Said Gallegos. “Back up quarterback is the hardest position because you never know what is going to happen.”
Senior starting quarterback Sergio Lopez was taken down hard by a Poway defender late in the 4th quarter. Enter junior southpaw QB Beau Gallegos. Gallegos drove the wildcats down the field, before hitting tight end Anthony Taele who proceeded to drag 3 poway defenders 10 yards into the end zone for the 1st score of the game, cutting the lead to 14-6.
El Camino then recovered and onside kick, two plays later Gallegos threw a deep ball to Eric Wilson who beat the defender for a 40 yard score. Moments later Gallegos did it with his legs scoring on a 2-point conversion to tie the game at 14.
The Wildcats defense forced a punt, and then it was Gallegos again, who couldn’t find a receiver, so he did it again with his legs scrambling for a touchdown and giving the Wildcats their 1st lead of the game at 21-14.
The poway offense had no answer for the Wildcats pressure the last minute of the ball game watching Derek Fernandez take down QB Chris Issak twice before Jacob Gaines was tackled as time expired.
Poway’s two scores came courtesy a 26 yard pass from Issak to Chris Butler on the 1st offensive play of the game for the Titans. And then a Play of the week worthy play by Andrew Cruz on 4th and goal from the El Camino 1, where Cruz scooped up a fumble and went 99 yards gave the Titans the 14-0 halftime lead.
This is the 3rd straight week Poway has blown a double digit halftime lead.
