North County Game of the Week: La Costa Canyon 21, Rancho Bernardo 13

La Costa Canyon-The La Costa Canyon Mavericks (3-1) raced out to a 21-0 1st half lead over previously undefeated Rancho Bernardo (3-1) behind quarterback Duke Mackle and his 2 TD runs and a TD Pass. Then relied on their defense in the 2nd half to get their 3rd straight win of the 2014 season.

A Rancho Bernardo fumble on their next offensive play and ensuing Mackle to Zach Goodkin 43 yard score gave LCC a 21-0 lead at the break.

But you can’t keep a good running back down. in the 3rd quarter, Range who had just 26 yards in the 1st half, broke off an 84 yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 21-6. RB’s Kameron Calhoun picked off a Mackle pass late int he 3rd leading to Range’s 2nd touchdown of the game, trimming the lead to 21-13 to end the 3rd.

But that was the last time Rancho Bernardo saw the end zone. Turning it over on from inside the Mavs 20, then several dropped balls and overthrows late, lead to the Mavs knocking the Broncos from the ranks of the unbeaten. Despite an 18 carry, 156 yard rushing night with the 2 TD’s Range Tweeted (@T_Range21), “I take full responsibility for tonight. I’m sorry I let my teammates, my school, and my community all down. We will bounce back next week.”

While Mackle and company said that this game was a learning experience on how to finish games. The Unranked Mavericks will more than likely find themselves in the Sections Top 10, while the #8 Broncos will likely drop out.
