North County Game of the Week Recap: Oceanside 35, La Costa Canyon 6
The Oceanside Pirates proved that they are still the measuring stick for San Diego High School football programs with their 35-6 win at La Costa Canyon in the UC San Diego Health System North County Game of the Week .Oceanside
(9-0) rode the back of Running Back Josh Bernard who accounted for 194 total yards and five touchdowns on just 15 touches, as they ran their win streak against La Costa Canyon (5-4) to 3 straight games.
The Mavericks controlled the ball for 19 of the 24 minutes in the 1st half which resulted in 2 booming field goals by LCC Kicker Jake Koehnke (47 and 40 yards but went into halftime down eight. A bad snap lead to a 1 yard Bernard score, and then just before half Matthew Romero found Bernard on a quick stab route that went 50 for a a 14-6 halftime lead.
Second half, John Carroll’s team dialed up the defense not allowing the Mavericks offense to even “sniff” the end zone.
And any thought that Oceanside was a one-dimensional offense behind Romero were answered.
Bernard who was offered a scholarship to Weber State Friday morning may have opened more college recruiters eyes. as he ran for three more scores, of 5, 3 and 14 yards.
With the win Oceanside Clinches at least a share of the Avocado East title, for the 3rd straight season. And win a win against El Camino on the final Friday of the regular season, the Pirates clinch the league title outright, a perfect regular season and more importantly to Oceanside they win the Oceanside City Championship.
La Costa Canyon will host rival Torrey Pines in the 9th annual “Beach Bowl”. The winner will be playing in the “Open Division” come playoffs, while the loser will likely host a game in the Division 1 Playoffs.
