North County Game of the Week: Oceanside 42, Mission Hills 16
Oceanside-The Oceanside Pirates (6-0) left little doubt that they are the best team in San Diego County after a 42-16 win over #2 Mission Hills (4-2) in the PPR North County Game of the Week Friday night at Simcox Field.
The Grizzlies opened the game, with a quick Strike from Junior quarterback Dakota Miller to Wide Receiver De Chaun Holiday who made an incredible catch in double coverage ripping the ball away from Malavai Taylor for a 37 yard gain. Mission Hills would drive down to the one yard line facing 4th and goal, Junior running Back Kameron Canteen tried to go up and over, but was stopped by the Pirates defense. “We have been practicing hard for 2 weeks and had to dig deep,” said senior Linebacker Tommy Woo. “That was Oceanside Defense.”
On the offensive side the Pirates 1st score of the game, was a halfback pass from Josh Bernard to Isaia PaoPao for a 7-3 lead, and Oceanside never trailed in the game again.
While Bernard has a TD Toss and TD Run, Senior Quarterback Matthew Romero, was the real star. Romero was 12-18 for 226 yards and four TD’s. Romero Redeemed himself, after throwing six interceptions in the 2 losses to Mission Hills in their two games including the “2013 Open Division Finals”.
“Last year hit us hard, and we wanted to come out here and get the win,” Said Romero. “They are a really good team, but Coach Carroll did a good job of getting us ready throughout the weeks, and we stuck to his game plan and got it done.”
Now the real question, will come when the latest CIF Computer rankings come out. Will the Pirates who were ranked 9th by the computer, but #1 in the Union-Tribune Poll move into the top 8 which will qualify them for the Open Division playoffs this season. And what will happen to Mission Hills who are ranked #13 by the computer and #2 in the U-T Poll.
Oceanside will host Torrey Pines next week on Homecoming as they open Avocado West League play. While Mission Hills will host Rancho Buena Vista to Kick off the Avocado East League.
