Draft Republic North County Game of the Week: La Costa Canyon Mavericks 19, Cathedral Catholic Dons 7

The North county game of the week saw La Costa Canyon defense dominate the (2) Cathedral Catholic Dons 19-7.

The Star of the show was LCC’s Austin “Ozzie” Nicholas, who accounted for six of the Mavericks nine sacks. He also lead LCC to a field goal on a 16 yard rush on a fake punt.

LCC (1-0) will host Vista (1-0) next Friday August 24.

Two of the “PPR Top 9” highlight our week 1 North County Game of the Week. That takes us to #5 La Costa Canyon High School, as the Mavericks host the #2 Cathedral Catholic Dons. These two teams matching up for the 1st time ever.

La Costa Canyon coming off a 7-4 season where they made the San Diego Section Open Division playoffs, while the Dons are coming off a 5-7 season in 2017, that saw them advance to the second round of the division 1 playoffs.

The Dons return 17 of their 22 starters on both offense and defense. The question mark, who will play quarterback. Senior Caleb Price and junior transfer from El Camino DJ Ralph will battle for playing time. What is no question, is who the number one running back for Sean Doyle who is in his 23rd season. That would be senior Shawn Poma who missed most of his junior season with a knee injury. And he has a a big and talented line to run behind, anchored by senior Miles McCormick and sophomore Ross Maseuli.

The Mavericks also have a young team highlighted by one of the fastest players in California in senior running back Karson Lippert. Before an ankle injury sidelined in 2017, he was on pace to run for more than 2,000 yards averaging 10 yards a carry. He is one of three players that have Division 1 offers. Linebacker Ozzie Nicholas was All-Avocado League as a sophomore for La Costa Canyon, and he will lead the Mavericks defense as well as play H-Back on offense. And talk about home grown, Junior quarterback Marshall Eucker was a ball boy for head coach Sean Sovacool when Coach Sovacool took over the program eight years ago.

Week one you never know what to expect, but most are picking the Dons to win this one, including this PPR North County Game of the Week Reporter. Cathedral 27, La Costa Canyon 21.

Highlights of this game and 31 others will be on the Prep Pigskin Report Friday night, with a new kick-off time at 11:00 PM. Also follow me on Twitter @Rickwillis99 for updates of the game on Friday night.
