North County Game of the Week: San Marcos 27, Westview 13

“Any Given Sunday” is the phrase that is popular in the NFL. And that was the almost the case…on a Friday at Westview High School.

The Westview Wolverines (1-4) hosted undefeated San Marcos Knights (5-0) on homecoming, but their undefeated record didn’t scare the Wolverines, as The Knights remained undefeated with a 27-13 win. Westview slowed down Jason Texler’s high powered offense holding them to just two 1st half field goals from the Knights, The teams went into the half tied at 6-6 behind super Sophomore AJ leonard and a 2 yard TD Plunge.

It looked like more of the same in the second half, and the wolverines did it with some flare, a remarkable catch by Westview senior WR Tyler Nelson over and around the San Marcos defensive back for a score had the Wolverines thinking upset with a 13-6 lead.

The Knight finally found their rhythm, driving down the field, a long pass from Senior QB James Harwell to Johnny McWilliams, lead to a short Semaj Wren TD to tie the game at 13.

The game stayed tied into the 4th, Wren then found some more running room, this time from 30 yards out for a touchdown and a 20-13 lead.

The Wolverines would not go away, driving down inside the Knights 5 yard line, and then the play of the game came when 6’6 DE Joah Robinett stripped Leonard just before the goal line, Hunter Muscio recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchback.

After that the Knights took control behind their ground game led by Wren, who would score his 3rd TD of the game to give the Knights the lead for good, as San Marcos heads into the bye week a perfect 5-0.

Both teams will have byes in week 6 before Westview hosts neighborhood rival Rancho Bernardo (3-2) on Friday October 10th, while San Marcos travels to Vista to face Rancho Buena Vista (1-4) in Avocado East League play.
