North County I-5 corridor project reaches major milestone

SOLANA BEACH (KUSI) – Cal Trans and SANDAG thanked many of the workers involved with what’s called the North Coast Corridor Program with a breakfast burrito and a photo early Tuesday.

The occasion celebrated the halfway-mark of the addition of  carpool/express lanes between Solana Beach and Carlsbad.  The project includes two new freeway bridges across San Elijo Lagoon.

Starting Sunday night into Monday morning, commuters need to be aware of a traffic shift here, one after the other, to allow for the old bridges to be torn down.

First, the shift involving the southbound lanes.  A week later, the shift involving the northbound lanes.  What’s more, it’s going to last for two years.  That brings us to another important note:  Safety.

The speed limit along the entire construction zone has been reduced to 55 miles an hour.  But the agencies, along with the CHP, don’t want drivers caught by surprise when the get to the lagoon.

Hence, getting the word out now. Keep the speed down and pay attention.
