Ocean View Christian Academy Patriots 28, St. Joseph Academy Crusaders 24

The close match envisioned on paper between the Ocean View Christian Academy Patriots (3-2) and the St. Joseph Academy Crusaders (3-2) was delivered Friday night, as the Patriots finished atop a see-saw battle to defeat the Crusaders 28-24.

The 8-man Citrus League’s passing yards and tackles leader, Patriots quarterback Alejandro Perez, may need a bigger sheet of paper for his 2015 resume as he appeared inclined to shine in his running game as well. Perez strung together two keepers for touchdowns, one in the second quarter for 24 yards and one in the third quarter for 11 yards, while also running in a 2-point conversion and stringing together multiple runs from scrimmage in between. Were it not for a first quarter that saw him sacked multiple times, including three times in a single series, Perez’ game Friday would include little to complain about.

On the other side of the ball, Crusaders running back Blase Kerekes was active on the ground as well, scoring on an 8-yard run in the second quarter and on a 60-yarder in the third.

The biggest play of the night came from Ocean View’s Mike Smith, who brought the Patriots into the lead in the third quarter with an 80-yard touchdown sprint that gave the Patriots a 22-16 edge despite a failed 2-point conversion. Kerekes’ 60-yard touchdown would give the lead back to the Crusaders but only temporarily, as Perez’ 11-yard keeper in the closing moments of the third quarter capped the night’s scoring.

Other scores Friday came from St. Joseph quarterback Andrew Marlow in the first quarter and Ocean View’s Dylan Loewenthal in the second.

In Week 7, the Patriots will face another Citrus League competitor, Warner High School, while the Crusaders will line up against Julian.

Week 6 of The Prep Pigskin Report brings us two teams both from the Citrus (8 Man) League- the Ocean View Christian Academy Patriots (2-2) and the St. Joseph Crusaders (3-1). The last time these two teams faced each other was last year with the Patriots coming out on top 49-16.

The Ocean View Patriots are coming off a huge win last week against San Pasqual Academy, beating them 34-32. When going into the fourth quarter, the patriots were down 32-22, but scored 12 unanswered points to win the game by 2. This brought their record to an even .500 heading into Week 6.

Senior Alejandro Perez of the Patriots is currently leading the Citrus League in Passing Yards with 445-yards and tackles (46). Yes, you read that correctly. Not only is Perez a quarterback for the Patriots, he also plays on the defensive side of the ball as a safety. If that doesn’t impress you enough, he is also plays basketball in the winter and then baseball in the fall. What can this kid not do?

The St. Joseph Crusaders are currently 3-1 right now and have blown out every team that they have beaten. Although the Ocean View Patriots beat the Crusaders last year, we could be seeing a new winner this week. Both teams match-up very similarly, which only means it’s going to be one heck of a game.

This week’s game will be held at Bradley Park in San Marcos at 7:00 PM. If you can’t make it to the game, make sure to catch all the highlights on the Prep Pigskin Report this Friday at 10:30 PM.
