Oceanside 28, Carlsbad 14

OCEANSIDE – The Oceanside Pirates held off the Carlsbad Lancers Friday night for their 8th straight win. But an event bigger than the game took place at Simcox field. Signs and t-shirts with the saying “Once a Pirate, Always a Pirate” printed on them were seen throughout the stadium. The tribute was for the late Junior Seau, who played football for Oceanside High School before going on to play for USC and the Chargers. The school presented Seau’s retired number 11 Pirates jersey to his parents as part of a halftime ceremony.

Carlsbad was coming off their thrilling OT win over La Costa Canyon last week, so they were ready to give Oceanside a run for their money. After Pirates QB Matthew Romero found Davione Taylor in the end zone, the Lancers answered with a score of their own, as Jackson Whitteker connected with Chris Spiering for the 37 yard touchdown pass. But RB Josh Bernard of Oceanside found the end zone and the Pirates led 14-7 at halftime. They would end up tacking on two more scores to seal the victory.

Oceanside improves to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in Avocado West League play, while Carlsbad falls to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.
