Oceanside residents rallying against controversial housing project

OCEANSIDE (KUSI) – A 585-home farm-themed community proposed for Oceanside’s Morro Hills area is being voted on by Oceanside City Council tonight.

The Oceanside Planning Committee has voted against the North River Farms project three times before tonight’s vote.

Council chambers and the overflow room were at capacity tonight and public comment lasted for more than four hours as Oceanside residents rallied against the possible housing development.

A representative from developer Integral Communities said the plan is ready to go after years of fine-tuning with help from city staffers, community leaders and residents. Opponents continue to stand their ground.

Many criticizing the project call it the wrong kind of growth for the city. Some of the biggest concerns included the traffic congestion that a project of its size might bring, impact on agricultural land, and fire and flooding danger.

City Council is still discussing the issue and is expected to reach a final vote tonight.
