Officer almost shot by own gun during arrest struggle

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – An officer was almost shot in the leg Sunday while trying to arrest an allegedly drunken woman.

The officer responded to a call around noon to the 3500 block of El Cajon Boulevard where 31-year-old Chelsea Saunders was allegedly drunk and yelling at customers inside a business.

According to San Diego police Lt. Mike Hastings, when the officer tried to arrest Saunders, she made a grab towards the officers handgun. The gun went off, striking the officer’s pant let, but nobody was injured from the gun discharge.

Saunders was booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, Hastings said.
