Officer involved shooting fatally wounds man in San Ysidro

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A man firing off a rifle at a San Ysidro mobile home park this afternoon was fatally shot during a confrontation with police, authorities said.

Patrol officers were responding to a report of gunfire in the 100 block of West Calle Primera when the fatal shooting occurred shortly before 2 p.m., according to San Diego police.

It was not immediately clear if the suspect had been struck by officers’ gunfire or if he may have shot himself.

The man, armed with what appeared to be an AK-47, died at the scene of the shooting. His name was not immediately released.

No other injuries were reported, though a residential trailer reportedly was struck by bullets.

Neighbors told news crews the suspect had been walking through the small mobile home park near the southern junction of Interstate 5 and I-805 with the gun in his hands, apparently searching for someone, and had fired shots prior to the arrival of police.

The gunfire prompted a brief lockdown at nearby Willow Elementary School.
